A new dawn for Bulldog Rugby

What a season we experienced in 2019, a historic first one in the WP High Schools Premier Rugby league! What matters, in this case, is not the scoreboard but the goals that were set, and exceeded 5 years ago. Herewith highlights of our historic first season in the Western Province High Schools Rugby League!

  • Inclusion into the WP High School’s Rugby Premier League
  • Most ever Bulldog Rugby teams on the paddocks
  • 1st Premier fixtures vs Rondebosch (Ranked 7th in SA) & Bishops (Ranked 9th in SA)
  • PV Rugby 1st XV included in the WP Top Schools Rugby Day at Newlands
  • 4 PV players included in WP U18 Invitational XV at the World School’s Rugby Festival
  • 5 Players included in WP Academy XV at Craven Week

Nonetheless, 2020 is almost here with less than 40 days to kick-off! Disappointingly, Parel Vallei High has not been fixtured by the WP Rugby Union against either traditional Helderberg rivals in 2020. However, a very demanding 2nd Premier League season lies ahead, culminating in our trans-provincial year-end derby against Pearson High at home this year at Camp Bulldog! Premier A fixtures against Stellenberg & Paarl Gym!

Internally, behind the scenes, a lot has been happening and I am excited to announce the following changes and additions to the PV Rugby Coaching structure for 2020. A “new” backbone for PV Rugby has been created (only a PV staff member is in charge of an age group as head coach) Myself, these 5 coaches (Seccies head coach incl) and the headmaster, now form part of an official PV Rugby Leadership group! We meet every Monday in season, escalate concerns, suggestions, discuss players and performance, as well as general PV Rugby ambassadorship across the board!

Another new development in 2020 is for the first time in 5 years we will be hosting the PV Rugby Dad’s and Lads Camp on our beautiful campus. The Saturday is a pure rugby coaching day for all teams to solidify a uniform style of play, defense and attack philosophies, transferred to the entire program by our own top coaches. All part of our new Bulldog vision!

I am mildly excited about the 1st XV for 2020 and look forward to the composition of the team when these boys run out at Newlands 14 March! Remains of the 2019 1st team are available again, such as Keanuh Michaels (WP), Kyle Slater (WP), Roux Niewoudt, Ashton van Earth, Jady Labuschagne, Sieg Goldner, Eric Kelly, Markus Dempsey, Michael Borcherds, Chadwin Brown and Cody Hing!

Not mentioning the many hungry young and dangerous under 16’s from last year, who have been part of the senior off-season program for the last couple months! Look out for names like Charles Booysen, Jan Harm Salomons, and Mateo Titus! The men are led by coaches Angelo Fritz (head coach), Beau Schoeman with Oom Piet Faasen again as Technical Advisor! Wimpie Burger joins as a full-time team manager and Charl Marx of Blaauw and partners our biokineticists!

The buzz of the town is still the “SA Schools Rugby Challenge” and the recent reports on the possible Parel Vallei / Garsfontein partnership! So many exciting things behind the scenes, but more about this at the right time! Together we count the days PV Rugby lovers and fans, less than 40 of them before the first whistle echoes through the Rupert Valley!

I cannot wait, Parel Vallei Rugby is ready … are you?
