Ashton International College recently had the tremendous honour of hosting the inaugural edition of the Legacy Summer Series which saw the South African Men’s hockey team take on the USA men in a 4 match test series sanctioned as a full FIH event. The event received FIH recognition and was given the green light to take place at Ashton International College due to our astroturf being fully recognized complying to full FIH “Global Standards” which allows Ashton to host international events.
The series was established to assist the SA men in their preparations for the upcoming Tokyo Olympics. The SA men started the series with 4 warm-up matches against the SA “A” side and then played two more warm-up matches against the USA before commencing with the 4 test match series. The SA men came away with a convincing 4-0 series win over Team USA earning South Africa valuable FIH ranking points for 2020. The standard of play was of an exceptionally high standard and it was amazing to be able to bring the international sport to Ballito. The matches were well supported with the weekend’s matches pulling over 1500 spectators. The matches were also streamed live via ShootSA and reached over 50000 viewers worldwide.
We thank all the sponsors, in particular Claire Black and Leven-Point (PTY) LTD, for making this event a reality. The community came together in this amazing event and we are extremely grateful for the opportunities presented to Ashton. We look forward to partnering with South African Hockey and the FIH to grow this series into a sustainable long term event with more countries taking part in future events.
We wish the SA men’s team all the very best for their forthcoming series against Germany in Johannesburg and for the remainder of their preparations for the Olympics.
