The FNB UKZN Impi couldn’t have wished for a worse start to the 2020 Varsity Shield going down 26-5 to last years runners up The Madibaz from Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth last Friday evening.
Leading 19-5 at the break the Madibaz went on to score four tries to one in what turned out to be somewhat of a disappointing opener for the students from KZN. However, in their defense, they are fielding a young side with a number of new faces. Hopefully, they can regroup and prepare for their first home game scheduled in two weeks’ time in round three at the Peter Booysen Stadium in Pietermaritzburg against last year’s winners of the Varsity Shield the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT).
The Madibaz opened the scoring early in the first half and never looked back and must now be considered early favorites to take the title this year considering that CPUT were given a rude awakening going down 22-12 on their home grounds in the Western Cape to the Walter Sisulu University from East London, in the big upset of the opening round.
Chadwyn November, Charles Radebe, Dundra Maritz and Duan Du Plessis crossed the line for the MadIbaz with Jordan Koekemoer converting three of the tries. UKZN Impi replied with a lone try from Sibonakaliso Dubazana. In the remaining game, Tswane University of Technology (TUT) edged out Rhodes 7-3 in Grahamstown.
On Friday evening TUT host CPUT, the Madibaz travel to East London to meet Walter Sisulu University while Fort Hare University is at home to Rhodes in Alice. UKZN Impi has a bye.
Meanwhile, the two top clubs in KZN – College Rovers and SA Home Loans Durban Collegians who are both busy preparing for the tough season ahead have officially announced their respective coaching and management complements. Rovers welcome two former Springbok and Sharks players into the mix.
