HOCKEY
It was a good start to the hockey season for College. Of the 19 games played against Northwood this weekend, College won 9, lost 5, drew 4 and one had to be abandoned.
1st XI MATCH REPORT (Coach: Mr Kyle Emerson)
The 1st XI travelled down to Northwood for the first match of the season. They were met with a spirited Northwood team and very hot and humid conditions. The first quarter saw both teams take some time to settle. Northwood sat deep for the majority of the game and were happy to try and soak up a bit of pressure and catch College on the counter-attack. College had a few circle entries in this quarter and earned two penalty corners but were unable to convert either due to good Northwood PC defence.
In the second quarter, College started to assert their dominance and created more meaningful chances. After a period of sustained pressure Lloyd Jansen van Vuuren opened the scoring with a superb back-hand to beat the Northwood goal keeper at his near post. Three minutes later Hayden Askew turned over the Northwood centre-back superbly and ran into the circle and rolled it past the keeper to make it 2-0 going into half time.
Thomas Conolly scored College’s third goal inside the first minute of the third quarter after Callum Osborne entered the right side of the circle and rolled it to far post. College found themselves a man down after receiving a card and Northwood made them pay with their numerical advantage. They were able to attack College’s circle, earning a penalty corner and scored with a superb flick into the top corner of the goal. College still a man down, fought back and were able to move the ball around the turf with speed and earned another penalty corner after Callum Osborne found himself in space and was able to attack the right side of the circle again. Ayakha Mthalane scored the penalty corner variation to take the score to 4-1.
The Northwood goal keeper made a few saves in the final quarter which meant the score line remain unchanged. A clinical display from the College 1st XI helped them to a good win in their first encounter of the season.

RUGBY
College played matches against Northwood in the main with some filler games played on the stagger against Kearsney, Linpark and Sarel Cilliers. It was a good start to the 2020 Winter Sport Season, with the RedBlackWhite winning 19 of their 25 games, losing just 4 and drawing 2.
1st XV REPORT (Coach: Mr Cameron Fraser)
On Saturday 14th March the College 1st XV travelled to Northwood on a hot humid and very sticky day. It was a physical affair and both teams tried to dominate in this epic encounter. College started off with two penalties in the 1st half courtesy of Henry Trodd, the College scrumhalf. Northwood managed to score a try just before half time after a lapse in concentration from the College defense. The half-time score was 7-6 to Northwood.
In the second half the Red Black White got their tails up and scored a brilliant try after some great interplay by the backs. Kaid Morsink crashed over for the 1st College try of the day. Henry Trodd again punished Northwood’s ill-discipline and stretched the lead to 7 points. Late in the second half College missed a few tackles off a lineout and the Northwood prop made a searching run. College conceded a penalty and Northwood capitalized with a quick tap to score a try out wide. The Northwood kicker didn’t disappoint and made the kick to tie up the game at 14 all.
