Sharks Take Long Term View

The Sharks have thrown their support behind a number of talented former schoolboy stars by contracting a number of junior players for the foreseeable future.

The advent of professionalism in rugby – particularly in the northern hemisphere has often led to the signing of high profile international stars in a bid to build a champion side. For The Sharks, however, success over the last couple of years at both junior and senior level, means the franchise is looking within by retaining the core of the side that led the Super Rugby competition at the time of its premature demise in March.

While a host of Springboks and long term stalwarts have put pen to paper to remain in Durban, it is the retention of the exciting young players that tells a story of a franchise looking to the long term. Players like Kerron Van Vuuren, something of a regular in the senior side over the past year, SA Under 20 captain Phepsi Buthelezi, the highly talented and exciting Sanele Nohamba and a host of locally schooled players will all remain in Durban as part of an exceptionally talented Cell C Sharks side that surely will boast regular silverware over the next few years.

Under head coach Sean Everitt, many of these youngsters enjoyed a remarkable season, winning the SA Under 19 competition without a solitary loss all campaign, and the continuity in player and coaching expertise can only mean that exciting times beckon for The Sharks.
