The three schools profiled in today’s article feature Westville Boys’ High, Maritzburg College and Kearsney College. Both of the Durban-based schools have fairly strong ties to The Sharks, with the potent midfield pairing of Brad Barritt and Waylon Murray during the mid to decade of the 2000s.

Barritt hails from Kearsney and has gone on to captain Saracens in the UK as well as featuring for the England national side, while Murray has returned to Westville as the current Director Of Sport.

More recently, the three du Preez brothers who played for the Cell C Sharks came out of Kearsney while back in the ‘90s, Natal players of the ilk of Shaun Payne, Shaun Platford, Dieter Kriese and dual provincial (cricket and rugby) Errol Stewart all attended Westville.

Maritzburg College has a rich tradition of supplying rugby players to the provincial and international set-up, including Philip Nel, Keith Oxlee, Joel Stransky, Jeremy Thomson and Butch James.

Fezo is a fantastic young man who always worked on his own, perfecting his skills. He played 1st Team for College in 2016 and 2017, represented Sharks at Grant Khomo, and 2 years Craven Week. He has been back to College to assist with coaching all the hookers at the school. He is extremely mobile for a hooker and has silky skills. He is a natural leader and is well-liked by everyone. One of those special human beings.

Mzamo had a really advanced EQ for a young man which gave him a special ability to connect with all his teammates and his coaches. His passion for drama spilled over into the practices and he was the first one to lighten the mood or fire up the team when the need arose.  He loved nothing more than being right in the middle of things which is probably why he enjoyed playing in the front row.  He coupled this with a brilliant attitude and strong resilience.  He played 1st XV in 2012 and 2013 and was selected for the Craven week team in 2013.  He regularly drops in at practices to give back to his school when his busy schedule allows.
