Saints bag two Rugby 7's Tournament titles

Saints, celebrating their victory at the Nashua U18 7's Tournament hosted by Maritzburg College.
It was a weekend full of action for the Blue & Gold with football in Durban, 7’s at Maritzburg College and Wembley, cricket in Johannesburg and cycling in Kloof.
The block football fixture was at Riverside Sports Complex where the Saints squared up with Clifton. The 1st team report by head coach Gary Ritchie describes both teams starting nervously and with a strong wind gusting it was not idea for a flowing spectacle. The visitors and the hosts struggled to create chances until mid-way through the 1st half when Clifton cleared a ball from deep and St Charles College goalkeeper Robert Cullis misjudged the flight of the ball and handled the ball just outside of the big box. A red card ensured and the boys from Pietermaritzburg were down to 10 men with only 18 minutes played. An out-player was substituted for replacement ‘keeper Owen Widdows. Clifton was then given a 50/50 decision which led to a penalty, and they scored to lead at half-time, 1-0. In the second half it was all St Charles College which led to wave after wave of attacks, finally striker ‘Shaz’ Maharaj won a penalty and Shaun Sithole left the ‘keeper with no chance. St Charles College nearly won it at the end, but it was not to be, and Clifton held on to a 1-1 draw.
Saints 7’s Trophy Hunting
Maritzburg College hosted the Nashua U18 sevens tournament this weekend. As reported by head coach, Dirk de Beer, Saints were in a tough pool with Michaelhouse, Maritzburg College and Durban High School.

First up was Michaelhouse and the St Charles boys were on a mission and played well to win by five tries to two. Next up was College, with a score to settle from a previous encounter the Saints went on the rampage and scored ten tries to one. With a healthy points difference in the bag, DHS was next on the cards. DHS with their big physical boys broke some tackles and ran out victors five tries to two.

Michaelhouse had their way with DHS leaving all three teams in a tie. On points difference the Saints boys went through to the final. In the other pool both Glenwood and Westville were in a battle to go through to the final, after dealing with College and Hilton. In an exciting match, Glenwood managed to win this battle.

The final for the Nashua Sevens tournament was St Charles vs Glenwood. The first half was tightly contested with the Saints scoring first and Glenwood catching up; halftime score at 7 points apiece, game on! The second half was an exciting display of excellent skill and a textbook performance by the boys in Blue and Gold. They upped the tempo and scored from the kick off. Four tries later Glenwood managed to score from a turnover ball. The final score in an enthralling final, 35-14 in favour of St Charles College. Well done to the Saints team on a great way to end the season. Thank you to Maritzburg College and Nashua for hosting the tournament.
Wembley U18 7’s Festival
The U18B team went out to play at the aQuelle Viv Wembley 7’s Festival on Saturday 31 August. As reported by Rugby Specialist, Mzi Nyathi, the Saints were in red-hot form in the last rugby Game Day of 2024 and from the onset took the host school to task in game one, scoring 40 unanswered points. The second game against Riverwood College was one that the boys approached with caution as the opposition had good intent to dent the performance of the Saints boys. After all was said and done, St Charles College came away victorious with a 380 scoreline. The next set of games were play-off games where St Charles College was drawn against Michaelhouse Red (their C – team) and the first points against the Saints were scored early on. The boys rallied together and lifted their performance to come away with a 24-5 result at the end.

The stars had aligned nicely with the final pitting St Charles College B against Michaelhouse Stripes (B – team). In a humdinger of a game, the score at half-time was 7-7. The second half saw the continued expression in attack and resoluteness in defence and the final score was SCC 14-14 MHS. The game then went on to a 3 minute sudden death which saw the Saints being put under pressure. In a quality tackle and a turnover, the Saints ran the ball for 70 metres with some slick off-loading and clinched the winning try for a 21-14 score. Well done to all the boys that contributed to this exciting finale.

The day ended on a very sombre note with news of a 7’s player and family members from a midlands school being involved in a fatal traffic accident. The St Charles College community share their deepest condolences and continue to keep all those effected by this tragedy in prayer.
