Sharks High Schools Rugby Roundup

The official fixture handbook publisher to the KwaZulu-Natal High Schools' Rugby Association.
The Sharks and Sharks High Schools Rugby Association, hosted the Griffons and Pumas in friendly inter-provincial fixtures on the 2nd and 9th October 2021. In light of the global pandemic that is still in our midst, it was a miracle that we were playing inter-provincial fixtures at that time of the year.

The purpose of these fixtures was to give our talented schoolboy rugby players a chance of showcasing their skills against quality opposition. My thanks goes out to the Griffons and Pumas for travelling down to KZN.

A fixture of this nature does not just happen overnight. A big thank you goes out to the Sharks for hosting this event at Jonsson Kings Park Stadium and for putting schoolboy rugby to the forefront.

Our appreciation must go to Dr Eduard Coetzee and his team, comprising of Mr Michael Horak, Mr Mike Vowles, Mr Donald Ngwenya, Mr Zola Mazwi and Mrs Sandra Gutierrez, for not only offering financial support to the Sharks High Schools Rugby Association, but for also hosting trials, high performance sessions and team practices.

My sincere thanks goes to Mr Wayne Usher, CEO of Peppers & Pans Catering, for not only catering for the fixtures, but also for his generous support of the Sharks High Schools Rugby Association.

Bottle water company Thirsti sponsored water and hydration for all 6 matches. We are thankful for their generosity and support.

Finally, my message to every player was to enjoy themselves. Rugby is a game that should be enjoyed, no matter where it is played, no matter who you are playing, no matter what the game situation. It is and will always be a great game and we are privileged to be part of it.

U18 CRAVEN WEEK REPORT
HEAD COACH: JEREMY MCLAREN

After the final whistle on Saturday the Craven Week side ended unbeaten after beating the Pumas 33-3 and the Griffons 41-12 in last week Sunday match.

The beauty of representing your Province and in this case, KZN, is definitely the highlight of many schoolboys.

Not just for the results but for the lasting friendships and the priceless memories. The one thing that makes a KZN team special is definitely the way the boys connect so quickly to put aside their school caps and play for one another as a Union.

Led by Bryce Calvert, Emmanuel Bhiya and Nick Hatton all Captains, the team performed pretty strong with limited time together.

Our selection process was once again spot on and all the players that were selected performed really well.

To all our schools coaches for all their hard work, thank you for putting in all the hard yards throughout their careers. And then lastly to the Craven Week coaches and management well done on another successful year.
ACADEMY REPORT
HEAD COACH: RUAN LOMBARD

The Sharks Academy Week side played two matches against the Griffons as well as the Pumas. This past two weeks was such a privilege and honour to see the boys showcase their talents on the field.

It is all about the boys representing their province and schools respectively. The thing about the sharks schools is that little motivation is needed to represent your province, the boys gel from the start so it makes it easier to coach.

Against the Griffons we won 39-24 but was our own worst enemy regarding discipline especially at the breakdown and this weakened our momentum to get into the game and a lot of 50/50 passes were out downfall.

Against the Pumas, we as a team and management discussed these matters as a team and knew that we can put on a good performance by eliminating these small errors and the boys played extremely well beating the Pumas 57-7.

As a coaching staff with Mr. Andy Ngcobo (defense) and Mr. Jono Piek (forwards) it was such a privilege and honour to represent our province.

We would like to say thank you for the Sharks for enabling the boys to play some rugby during these times, in the end it's all about them and dreams did come true.
GRANT KHOMO REPORT
HEAD COACH: NASEEB ABRAHAMS

In this pandemic era, it was great to see schoolboy rugby back at the Provincial level after 2 years. The pride of putting on a Sharks jersey is a dream of many schoolboys across our province and the 23 young men chosen this year did not disappoint. Captained by Sasha Kadira of Maritzburg College the Under 16 team went 2 for 2 in their respective inter provincial friendlies against the Griffons and Pumas on the legendary Kings Park Field.

The boys came out strong in game 1 against the Griffons in a dominant display and came away with a 48-7 victory. In game 2 the boys had to show some character to fight back against a great performance from the Pumas and took the lead in the last 15 minutes of the game to win 32-24.

It was a honor to be part of this team with fellow coaches Tim Orchard and Njabulo Zulu and thank you to the Sharks High School Executive, The Sharks, principals, school coaches, physios, peppers and pans, bus drivers, parents and all the players in province. Without all of you this would not be possible.
