Kingswood College is a leading co-educational boarding and day school for children from Grade 000 to Grade 12 where there are unique opportunities for every child to flourish at school, and beyond.
Kingswood College is a school where everyone knows your name. Where the connections between the pupils and staff feel like family, where big dreams and aspirations are fulfilled, and where we care deeply not only about the uniqueness of every pupil but also their family. Kingswood pupils are happy children. Our motto - ‘Studia Hilaritate Proveniunt’ - means; ‘In cheerfulness is the success of our studies’, and this cheerful character can be felt in everything that we do.
“At Kingswood, we want all our pupils to live life to its fullest; to have the opportunity to find their passion, to sharpen their intellect, discover who they are and leave our school believing that they can go on to make a difference in society.”- College Head, Leon Grové
Kingswood College holds true to the rich traditions of a Methodist boarding school while providing innovative and creative experiences in the academic, cultural and sporting programmes on offer at our school. Our overarching vision is to ‘educate our pupils for life’ and this vision is lived out in all that we do: our holistic academic curriculum and co-curricular programme is designed to bring out the best in each pupil. We strive to build character whilst developing leaders who shine in areas of their strength and interest.

ACADEMICS
At Kingswood College, we create an environment that aims to foster the building of a strong foundation for lifelong learning through the promotion of a positive learning environment - one that stimulates the creation of enthusiasm for learning.
With the aim of Educating for Life, through innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship we develop skills in young Kingswoodians, which give them the capacity to think on their feet, to be creative in the moment and to fully embrace the notion of lifelong learning. The introduction of Robotics in Junior School and into our Grade 8 and 9 curriculum, forms part of this process. Outdoor education activities remain an important and fundamental component of the philosophy of the College.
Kingswood pupils write matric examinations set by the Independent Examinations Board (IEB), giving them a school-leaving qualification that is truly world-class.
An important aspect of an IEB matric is that it is an internationally benchmarked qualification. The IEB NSC is recognised by the United Kingdom National Academic Recognition Information Centre (UK NARIC) and as such, is considered equivalent to the UK AS-level qualification.
Many of our past pupils have been accepted and studied at prestigious universities around the world because of this opportunity.
Pre-Primary
Welcome to a world of wonder where children from the age of 3 turning 4 can explore, discover, dream and imagine.
We want all our pupils to live life to its fullest; to be confident in who they are, sharpen their intellect and go on to make a difference in society.
The Eastern Cape is home to some of the finest wilderness areas in South Africa. Grahamstown lies at the heart of this with access to the coast and the mountain ranges of the Eastern Karoo uplands. There are not many places in South Africa with a greater variety of habitats right on your doorstep. At Kingswood we believe that learning outside the classroom is just as important as the learning that happens inside the classroom and with this in mind, we place emphasis and great importance on our Adventure Based Leadership and Education (ABLE) programme.
Through the programme, there are not only endless opportunities for our pupils to develop and discover new talents, it also provides a means for us to instil a meaningful love of the environment and the outdoors and encourage healthy active lifestyles. Leadership, technical skills, self-awareness, character and grit are also just some of the skills that are focused on throughout the programme.
Outdoor skills - the outdoor skills component includes things such as camping skills, first aid and rescue, mountain safety and water safety.
Leadership and followership - team building, adventure-based learning (abseiling, tree climbing, water crossing, rope climbs etc), problem-solving, leadership/mentorship skills.
Applied curriculum - this includes academic, pastoral and physical education aspects of the school curriculum.
CHRISTIAN ETHOS
Constructed in honour of Kingswoodians who fell during the World Wars, our beautiful Chapel stands at the heart of the Kingswood College community and underpins our Christian (Methodist) heritage, ethos and values. The Kingwood Chapel is more than just the building: it reflects our sense of belonging and of what it means to be a Kingswoodian.
Kingswood College is a co-educational Methodist school where the Christian faith serves as the fundamental guiding principle of the College. Emphasizing God’s love for all and respecting diverse beliefs, we encourage the curiosity for, and a relationship with, God.
SPORTS
At Kingswood, from the beginner to the elite athlete, we strive to not just offer every girl and boy the opportunity to participate in a wide range of sports, but to inspire a lifelong interest and enjoyment in it.
Our team of dedicated full-time professional coaches (hockey, cricket, rugby, netball, water polo and tennis) and passionate specialist teacher-coaches (across the other disciplines) play a key role in helping each pupil fulfil their potential, and ensure our teams play in some of the most competitive school sports leagues in the country. Many Kingswood pupils also hold numerous provincial and national representations across various disciplines.
Unrivalled Choice
Pupils have the opportunity to play multiple sports at a top level and are never forced to specialise.
All pupils have the opportunity to represent the school at sports.
Our smaller school size provides opportunities for more focused coaching and attention, ensuring our girls and boys have well rounded physical and social development through sport.
Unrivalled Choice
Our large campus is home to some amazing sporting facilities: seven sports fields (one floodlit), a full-sized swimming and water-polo pool (floodlit), an astroturf (floodlit), courts for tennis (floodlit), netball (indoor and outdoor), basketball (indoor and outdoor), squash, an athletics track and a High-Performance Centre, complete with indoor running track, weights room, aerobic circuit areas and more.
THE ARTS
The Arts form an integral part of Kingswood College life.
Art, Music and Drama at Kingswood provide a space for our pupils to build confidence, express themselves creatively, develop as innovative and open-minded individuals and foster a curiosity for the arts.
Creative thinking, collaboration, discipline, and bold expression are all essential skills for school and beyond.
Music
The Music School, established in 1996, is home to seven music teachers and the many pupils who cross its threshold every week. A wide-ranging series of concerts occur throughout the academic year, ranging from solo recitals and large-scale concerts both on campus and off.
All pupils take part in music as part of their curriculum up to Grade 9 level, thereafter they can continue with Subject Music as one of their core subjects, or just participate on an enrichment level.
Every pupil at Kingswood is given the opportunity to play music and use it as a means to express themselves. We offer a very wide variety of instruments such as the flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophones, trumpet, trombone, french horn, tuba, euphonium, violin, cello, double bass, piano and organ. All instruments are taught by specialized teachers in each field.
Each and every music pupil takes part in a band or ensemble group during their tuition in order to help them develop self-discipline, self-confidence and teamwork. Music has been proven to develop the mind, body, coordination of motor skills and it builds imagination.
Drama
With both junior and senior school productions, inter-house plays, outstanding academic results, and talent to spare, Kingswood’s Drama department entertains and inspires the entire Kingswood community. All pupils take part in drama as part of their curriculum up to Grade 9 level, after which pupils can choose the Dramatic Arts as one of their core subjects, or just participate on an enrichment level.
Visual Art
Visual Art is highly valued at Kingswood and we enjoy a long tradition of excellence at the school. A subject that activates the imagination and cultivates creative thinking, the skills gained from the subject are increasingly essential in many careers and businesses in the 21st century. Visual Art is comprised of theory (Art History) and a practical component.
BOARDING
A home where all belong A culture of family
The boarding houses at Kingswood are more than just buildings; they are a special part of a pupil’s time and identity at the school, and it is here, where they become part of a community of friends, peers and staff.
With about 20% of our Junior and 75% of our senior school pupils boarding at Kingswood, there is a lively and vibrant campus life with a relaxed, family atmosphere that ensures that even our youngest pupils can settle in and feel at home.
We welcome boarders from all over South Africa, Africa and the world, and no matter where they come from, they are welcomed into a diverse and supportive community where they are valued and cared for.
