Westville Boys’ High School edged Durban High School 26-24 in a thrilling U17 Cup final to claim the opening-round honours in the Clover High Schools 7s Series at Glenwood High School on Saturday.
The two-point victory capped an action-packed day of schoolboy sevens, with Westville and DHS producing one of the day’s most closely fought encounters.

Westville were made to work for the title as DHS pushed them all the way in a high-intensity final. Hosts Glenwood also provided strong competition across the U17 and U15 age groups, highlighting the depth of sevens rugby among the region’s leading schools.
The U17 Plate went to St Charles College, who beat Howick High School 38-7, while Michaelhouse secured the Bowl with a 21-14 victory over Hoërskool Pionier. Glenwood 2 rounded off the U17 finals with a 42-7 win over Umlazi in the Shield.

DHS turned the tables in the U15 Cup final, however, cruising to a comprehensive 47-0 victory over Glenwood. Northwood claimed the U15 Plate after beating St Charles College 26-5.

In the remaining U15 finals, DHS (3) defeated Griffons 19-7 in the Bowl.

The opening leg provided an exciting start to the Clover High Schools 7s Series, with the quality and competitiveness on display setting the tone for what promises to be an entertaining campaign.

The series now moves to Hoërskool Pionier in Vryheid on 21 and 22 August.
