High school is a special time in everyone’s lives. For young men at Maritzburg College, life is defined by the best of boyhood. This is a chance to be young, learn, and feel the fraternity of friendship. It is also a formative time, where the first meaningful marks of identity are carved. Maritzburg College is the perfect setting for boys to go through this time of their lives. Their days are marked with the fun and friendship of school life but, at College, our aim is for this to be some of these boys’ greatest days.

The beautiful College campus, with extensive sports fields and exquisite old buildings, become the backdrop to this time. We strike a healthy balance between academic, sport, and cultural life – with top facilities for boys to grow curiosity, nurture their interests, and find their place in the school. This builds confidence and marks etchings on character that will be there forever.

Boys find their place - but they are also pushed to explore the boundaries of their potential. In the classroom and in cultural clubs and societies, our highly-proficient staff offers motivation, knowledge, and life experience to encourage critical thinking. Our world-class High Performance Centre is a hub of sports-based and personal physical development. In a traditions-based school like College, doing service to the school means doing service to others and leadership and outreach opportunities exist for all boys.

College has evolved considerably over the last few decades, and today offers a multitude of opportunities for all boys to find their niche and be happy. Having the boys fulfil their academic potential remains the school’s priority, and we are committed to providing each boy with a well-rounded relevant and excellent education experience.

Our matric results over the last decade are the best of any boys’ state school, with our boys consistently being accepted into their tertiary studies of choice, both locally and overseas. A wide range of subjects, outstanding resources, manageable class sizes, exciting and challenging academic extension opportunities, as well as academic support options, ensure that every boy can reach his full potential.

The cultural programme at Maritzburg College is diverse enough to cater for every interest and aptitude. Cultural activities are a key component when it comes to the holistic development of young men. The skills learned during these pastimes will enrich every boy’s time in the classroom and serve him well into his professional and adult life.

Whether a boy is creatively inclined or looking to pursue new interests, culture at College is a deeply rewarding part of the extra-curricular programme. The exciting range of clubs and societies encourage every boy to dance, sing, act, perform, debate, play music, write, create art, do good, use digital tools, produce, and grow spiritually. We are committed to nurturing a passion for culture. A range of events is scheduled throughout the year for boys to challenge themselves, learn, and grow their cultural talents.

College has one of the biggest co-curricular programmes in the country, where every boy is given the tools to be able to do his best. We emphasize participation at all levels, with opportunities for high performers, and for boys to be part of a team environment, where they will experience to face and overcome challenges by competing amongst the best.

Our national sport and culture exchanges with top schools around the country involve over 800 boys participating twice a year. With 20 sporting codes and 17 cultural offerings to choose from, our boys also benefit from having top quality facilities including a heated pool, indoor High Performance Centre with medical facilities, two Astro turfs, eight sports fields, a dedicated Cultural Centre, indoor shooting range, two indoor basketball courts as well as access to a world class athletics stadium, soccer pitch, cricket oval and cycling velodrome.

Often referred to as the backbone of the school, the boarders at Maritzburg College are a tight-knit group of boys. This home environment within the school often creates a sense of fierce loyalty to the school – one that lasts a lifetime.

The school has adjusted well to the demands of a modern society, while retaining its unique character and this is especially apparent in our boarding establishment of five boarding houses, which boasts a compliment of 490 boys and 50 live-in staff. The well-equipped boarding houses and other resources ensure our boarder experience all the comforts of home life while forming the unique bonds of boarder brotherhood.

From fostering personal growth to forming the foundation of great teamwork, leadership is a primary skill for school-going young men to master. Maritzburg College’s Leadership Programme creates practical and knowledge-based leadership opportunities for all boys – in engaging ways that leave lasting impressions. This empowers all College boys with qualities that will prove invaluable in their future studies and working lives.

Within Every Boy is a Leader
Every boy has leadership qualities and, at College, we work with all boys to ensure they make the most of their capabilities. Boys who display particular leadership strengths are earmarked for leadership roles within the school.

The College Leadership Programme evolves as boys progress through the forms. It consists of an in-classroom leadership curriculum through the Life Orientation class, leadership camps, training seminars and workshops, leadership evaluation opportunities and aptitude tests. Many leadership positions are available within the school and budding leaders are primed to excel within these roles. Leadership also forms a central component of the pastoral care and mentorship programme at the school.
