St Charles College hosted neighbours Maritzburg College in the local City Derby. Both teams were anxious to showcase their skills in what was going to be an interesting contest. It was the visitors who had the bulk of the possession with the opening 15 minutes but lacked penetration in their midfield and were looking to play from deep.
Maritzburg College began its 7’s rugby season this weekend with the U15 and U17 teams participating in the Glenwood tournament. It was a busy sporting weekend on the campus, as College hosted an U11/ U13 hockey festival which saw the best of the primary school hockey talent compete on our campus! The Dudley Forde Aquatic Centre was alive with kayaking action, while our soccer teams took on Glenwood.
The highlight of the past weekend’s sporting action was undoubtedly Maritzburg College’s squash team placing 2nd in South Africa at the Top Schools tournament. For the last of the winter fixtures of 2025, College’s rugby and hockey teams headed down to Durban to take on Glenwood and ended the season with excellent results. College also hosted the 2nd KZN Schools Cycling race, and there was also canoeing and soccer action from the RedBlackWhite.
The weekend saw College host long-time friends and rivals from Pretoria Boys High for the 2nd sporting exchange of the year. This was the last of the home winter fixtures. College’s canoeists and cyclists also had a busy weekend producing excellent results.
The first fixtures of the 3rd term saw over 800 Maritzburg College boys and staff head up to Gauteng to face the formidable Affies in a full sporting and cultural exchange. Over a busy sporting weekend. College’s boys competed in canoeing, soccer, cycling and debating, producing excellent results.
The 2025 FNB U18 Craven Week Rugby was held in Middelburg. Craven Week is always a highlight on the schoolboy rugby calendar - a stage where provincial pride, talent, and character are tested. This year’s edition, hosted in Middelburg, was no different and proved to be a week of hard lessons, growth, and moments of brilliance for our U18 side.

Michaelhouse welcomed College to Balgowan for the 180th clash between the two schools on the hosts Old Boys Day. Both were coming off the back of wins over Pretoria Boys (MHS) and Kearsney (College) and it proved to be the fierce contest it promised to be.
Saturday will mark the 180th clash between Maritzburg College and Michaelhouse since the 0-3 loss in 1897 - Michaelhouse's first rugby match ever. It has been suggested that the encounter was the very first schoolboy rugby match in the Colony of Natal.
On Saturday Kearsney’s One-Stripe faced a formidable Maritzburg College team on their Old Boys Reunion Weekend. College was first on the board with a well-executed try from counter attack which saw them dot down to the left of the uprights.
Over the past weekend, thousands of Old Collegians returned to their alma mater for the 2025 Reunion Day, which saw the boys from the Red Black White take on Kearsney in a full round of hockey and rugby fixtures.
It was a day when College triumphed as our boys played with heart, determination and true grit and fire, producing exceptional results.
After two seasons diminished by COVID (2020-2021) and some irregular fixture outcomes, it has been a long seven years since College and Kearsney last met at Goldstone’s – a match that was called off due to lightning, with the College side, captained by future Springbok prop Ntuthuko Mchunu, leading 6-0. This weekend, Old Collegians will celebrate their 128th Reunion weekend against their traditional rivals, Kearsney College.
The Maritzburg College rugby A teams faced tough competition against Westville in the Sharks trials with some close scoring games. Producing excellent rugby action, the 1st XV lost narrowly 21-22.
Old Boys’ Day 2025 was always destined to be special, marking the 150th year of St Charles College. And on a packed Old Orchard’s field in Pietermaritzburg, the spectacle delivered on every front - electric rugby, passionate supporters, and a celebration of tradition that will live long in the memory.

Maritzburg College sent over 800 boys and staff up to Pretoria Boys’ High for the annual exchange, which saw a full round of both rugby and hockey fixtures against one of our longest and strongest school partners.
The Saints were up against the Green Machine on Saturday. The 1st team reports have been provided by our head coaches. Earlier in the week, the 1st team golf enjoyed a strong performance to overcome Hilton’s top golf team at Victoria Country Club and our water polo teams remained unbeaten against Glenwood.
