In a fixture that carried both history and anticipation, St Alban’s and Menlopark met in a full derby for one of the first times in over a decade. On the day, it was a sharp and well-drilled Menlopark side that came out on top, securing a 55-20 victory.

The match began on an even footing, with St Alban’s striking first through a penalty goal by Gian Moolman. The early advantage was short-lived, however, as an error from the restart allowed Menlopark to respond immediately with an impressive run down the left wing to take the lead.
Despite the setback, St Alban’s showed strong intent, particularly in their territorial play. Sustained pressure pinned Menlopark deep inside their own half, earning St Alban’s four kickable penalties. Unfortunately, all four attempts went astray, leaving valuable points unclaimed.
Menlopark capitalised on these missed opportunities. An overthrow at lineout time was gathered by their flyhalf, who broke clear and covered 50 metres in a sweeping counterattack. The move ended in a penalty try following a high tackle from Thabiso Simelane, reducing St Alban’s to 14 men.
Even with a player down, St Alban’s showed resilience, limiting Menlopark to two further scores during this period. One of the standout moments of the match followed a turnover in transition, with Menlopark launching a full-length attack that resulted in a superb try, arguably the highlight of the game.

St Alban’s managed to close the half on a positive note, with Pieter Jordaan finishing off a well-constructed multi-phase attack. However, Menlopark held a commanding 33-8 lead at the break.
The second half saw Menlopark continue to build on their advantage, adding to their tally through a well-executed maul. St Alban’s responded with intent, as Thabiso Simelane made amends with a determined run down the touchline, both starting and finishing the move for a well-taken try.
As the game opened up, both sides traded scores. St Alban’s added another through a quick tap and an incisive run down the flank, but Menlopark’s consistency ensured they remained comfortably ahead.
At the final whistle, the scoreboard read 55-20 in favour of Menlopark. While it was a difficult outing for St Alban’s, the match offered clear lessons and highlighted areas for growth as they continue to build and improve in the weeks ahead.
