Red, Black and Brilliant: Maritzburg College’s winning weekend

On a sweltering Saturday afternoon, the fierce Maritzburg derby between Maritzburg College and St Charles lived up to its reputation, delivering a thrilling contest packed with intensity and standout performances.

RUGBY

Maritzburg College struck first, asserting early dominance through tighthead prop Alande Ngubane, who powered over from close range to open the scoring. It marked an impressive milestone for Ngubane, as the try was his 10th of the season - a remarkable achievement for a front-row forward.

St Charles responded with flair, getting onto the scoreboard thanks to a brilliantly executed kick pass that opened the College defence and led to a well-taken try. Despite this moment of creativity, they struggled to contain a relentless College side.

The standout performer of the day was undoubtedly Theo Boshoff, who delivered a sensational display by crossing the try line four times. His pace, power, and finishing proved too much for the St Charles defence to handle.

As the match wore on, Maritzburg College’s superior speed and physicality became increasingly evident. They controlled the tempo and dominated key phases of play, ultimately pulling away to secure a convincing 45-5 victory.

HOCKEY

Maritzburg College welcomed our neighbours St Charles to Papes for another fixture between these two schools.

St Charles were coming into this game with some good form and some pleasing results over the last few weeks. With their tails up and the opportunity put College under pressure, St Charles came out flying. College countered this by controlling the tempo as well as staying calm in defense compacting their space and turning over the ball with ease.

College Played some really good attacking hockey and created opportunities. College force the St Charles goal keeper into making an error and forcing the umpire into awarding a penalty stroke for the infringement. Matthew Smith buried the stroke to take College to one nil going into the halftime break.

The second half saw College have majority control and created more opportunities. Matthew Smith scored his second goal through a wonderful piece of skill from the baseline, spinning with the ball to push it into the near corner. College would force another penalty stroke through a counter attack, from the ball hitting the last defender on the line. Matthew Smith stepped up to take the stroke to get the score to 3-0.

Well done to the College boys on a solid performance and a good win over our neighbours. Well done to Matthew Smith on scoring a hat trick.

SOCCER

This past Wednesday, College faced Linpark in an Inland League fixture.

College dominated possesion in the first half and N.Ngcemu gave his team a well-deserved lead going into half-time.

College continued from where they left off in the second half and Z.Duma added the second goal with a brilliant individual run and finish down the left wing.

Linpark managed to get on the score-sheet late on, but College held their nerve to secure the 3 league points. College won 2-1.
