School Focus: Ashton International College Benoni

INTRODUCTION
Founded in 1998, Ashton International College Benoni can be described as a school of opportunity and choice; offering a ‘uniquely different’ amalgamation of subjects, state-of-the-art facilities and an experienced and efficient administration. We offer what we term ‘Two Worlds in One’, an academic system covering the highly credible Independent Examination Board (IEB) and the Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) curricula; both of which are assessed independently, composed with integrity and delivered professionally by our high trained and passionate teachers. We strive for excellence in preparing our students to take a leading position in the building of a united South Africa through an education that challenges each student to think, question and strive for excellence of mind, body and spirit in a happy, nurturing environment.

In addition, we uphold and practise the South African Constitutional values of human dignity, democracy, equality and multicultural diversity. At Ashton we encourage all students to participate in a variety of Cultural, Academic and Sporting extra-curricular activities; including our community responsibility and specialised clubs. As are all aspects of Ashtonian life, our extra-curricular activities are deeply rooted in our College Ethos and Philosophy. Our Ethos of kindness, respect and responsibility, combined with our Philosophy to encourage each student to develop their unique talents, allows us to assist our students in unlocking their full potential in life.

Ashlings Academics
Our Pre-school groups range from Grade 0000 through to Grade R, enabling us to cater for 3 to 6 year olds. The classrooms are fully equipped with games and teaching materials, which enable our teachers to provide a stimulating and creative atmosphere, in which students are guided and encouraged, through a rich hands-on experience, to develop optimally.

Our robotics and computer lessons are available from Grade 00, as part of the curriculum, providing them with skills that will future-proof their educational journey.
Our Music and Movement program is an essential part of our preschool curriculum as it promotes physical movements, an understanding of spatial awareness, develops creativity, socio-emotional skills, improved self-confidence and many more areas of development. The Ashlings enjoy making use of the following musical instruments: Shakers, Xylophone, Rhythm Sticks, Drums, Hands, Feet and Voice.

At Ashton, sporting activities start with students as young as Grade 0000.

Foundation Phase Academics Grade 1 - Grade 3
Ashton’s introduction to formal learning is a happy and exciting one. We believe in nurturing the individual and supporting different learning styles. Students in this part of their studies are exposed to a rich and varied curriculum, embracing many aspects of the IEB and Cambridge Curricula. We encourage creative thinkers and instill a love for the arts, culture and sport.

Intersen Phase Academics Grade 4 - Grade 7
In the Intersen Phase there is strong focus on developing and maintaining a strong work ethic while encouraging a growth mindset which promotes critical thinking skills. Students are also encouraged to participate in Sport and Cultural activities on offer. This ensures well rounded individuals who are prepared for their Senior College years.

Senior College Academics Grade 8 - Grade 12
We pride ourselves on combining the excitement and innovation of a relatively new concept in education by offering students the best of both worlds. In Form 1 the students are introduced to the broader spectrum of subjects offered on a cross-curriculum of the Cambridge Assessment International Examinations (CIE) and the Independent Examinations Board (IEB). At the end of this first year, students choose seven subjects for their Form 2 year selecting either the Cambridge Curriculum or the IEB Curriculum, provided they have achieved the required minimum standard. Our focus is on Academic, Sport and Cultural Excellence.
We have continued to grow our sporting code offerings and sport is offered throughout the school year. Our sport is seasonal and at times, the different sporting codes will overlap, especially when pre-season training is in progress. We require our students to display sportsmanship at all times and promote good, healthy relationships with all schools we engage with on the sports fields.

Ashton Benoni is home to a 7000m2 multi-purpose Rhino-Turf sports field. The first of its kind on the African continent and the same professional brand trusted by various international sporting clubs including Chelsea Football Club, Ashton’s revolutionary Rhino-turf assists in enhancing the performance of talented young athletes and gives Ashton a competitive advantage on the sports field. A six-lane 25m indoor heated swimming pool allows for year-round training under professional coaching.
