School Focus: Hillcrest High School

INTRODUCTION
Hillcrest High School - Where Good Results!

Hillcrest High School aims to nurture the holistic development of learners. Passionate and experienced educators, coaches, and professionals work tirelessly to prioritise the growth and advancement of each learner based on their individual strengths and challenges, providing them with the opportunity to not only Dream, but also Believe in, and Achieve their goals.

The school was founded in 1976 and will celebrate 50 years of service to the Hillcrest and Upper Highway community in 2026. Hillcrest High School, or HHS as it is fondly known by learners and the community alike, prides itself in providing an environment where learners can explore their passions, interests, and talents, to discover the best possible future for themselves.

In addition to a broad range of subject choices on offer in the FET phase (Grade 10 - Grade 12), learners in the GEC phase (Grade 8 and 9) are exposed to a wide range of academic, cultural, service, and sporting opportunities, as well as guidance on subject choices to enable them to make the best subject choices to help them realise their goals.

High Academic Standards and Achievement: Hillcrest High School has consistently attained excellent results in the National Senior Certificate examinations and 2024 was no exception. The 217 strong Matric Class of 2024 achieved a 97% pass rate, 195 distinctions, and 156 Bachelor’s passes. Top Achiever, Annika Adendorff, joined the ranks of several past pupils in recent years achieving 8 distinctions, including As for Mathematics, Physical Sciences, Life Sciences, Accounting, and German, which she took as an additional subject. Kiarra Chetty and Abigail King followed close on her heels with 7 distinctions each.

At HHS academic excellence includes supporting learners who find the classroom a challenging place to excel. A learner support unit and concessions programme, which includes scribes and readers, as well as a smaller environment in which to learn and complete examinations, assists those who may not have believed they could have achieved their dream of completing Matric.

In addition to the standard daily education programme, learners are able to attend additional extra lessons, available free of charge, in most subjects with educators willing to provide any additional support required to help them reach their goals.

Learners are encouraged to pursue their passion, challenge themselves, and strive to be the best they can be.

If HHS does not offer the sport or activity that a learner is passionate about, and other learners are keen to participate, it is encouraged and teams are founded. A case in point is currently Springbok Women’s Team member, Tayla Kinsey, who has competed in three Rugby World Cups, reaching the final in 2025, and who kick started the Touch Rugby programme at Hillcrest High School. Aside from rugby legend, Tayla Kinsey and mountain and road biker, Alan Hatherley, who currently holds the title as World Champion, many of our current and past pupils have sported the Green and Gold, representing South Africa with pride.
