MERENSKY LANDBOU AKADEMIE: 90 JAAR VAN TROTS, TRADISIE EN UITNEMENDHEID
Van ’n beskeie begin in 1936 tot een van Suid-Afrika se voorste landbouskole. Merensky Landbou Akademie in Tzaneen vier vanjaar 90 jaar van uitnemendheid, prestasies en ’n besondere skoolgees wat geslagte lank reeds voortleef.
On 30 January 1936, the doors of a school opened that would help shape thousands of young people over the next nine decades. Today, 90 years later, Merensky Agricultural Academy, with more than 1,300 learners, still stands proudly as a beacon of quality education in Limpopo.

Wat Merensky besonders maak, is die buitengewone verskeidenheid leergeleenthede wat op een plaas aangebied word. Leerders kan hulself binne drie hoofrigtings uitleef: Algemene Akademie, Agri-Wetenskappe en Musiek, Dans, Drama en Kuns (MDDK).
The MDDA, which operates as a school within a school, offers training in piano, guitar, ukulele, drums, singing, dance, drama, ceramics, photography, creative writing, public speaking and debate. Here, creativity is nurtured, and young artists are given the opportunity to develop their talents to a national level.
Landbou bly egter die trotse kern van Merensky se identiteit. Die skool se Agri-Merensky-kampus beskik oor ’n wêreldklas-landboulaboratorium, moderne tegniese sentrums, ’n goed toegeruste kleinvee-opleidingsfasiliteit en ’n moderne landboulosie.
Agricultural learners participate at national level in youth show competitions involving cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, poultry and rabbits, as well as crochet, auctioneering competitions, dairy production and the culinary arts.
Merensky se 90ste bestaansjaar is gekenmerk deur ’n indrukwekkende reeks prestasies.
Op sportgebied het die Plasies die Soutpansberg-atletiekinterhoër gewen en boonop die geesbeker, toekenning vir beste dogtersdirigent en beste dirigentegroep ingepalm. Die skool het ook die Soutpansberg-landloopinterhoër gewen.
The swimmers were crowned Mopani Inter-High Champions and produced the senior Victor and Victrix Ludorum. Merensky’s girls’ tennis team won the Northern Region A-League, while the hockey programme produced nine Limpopo league-winning teams. The U14A girls’ hockey team was also crowned Northern Vaal Grand A Champions.

Op internasionale vlak het Merensky ’n wêreldkampioen by die World Field Archery-kampioenskappe in Amerika opgelewer, waar ook ’n nuwe Amerikaanse rekord in die Field Round opgestel is.
Altesaam 95 Merensky-leerders is in 2026 in Limpopo-sportspanne opgeneem, ’n merkwaardige bewys van die skool se sportdiepte.
History was also made in agriculture when Limpopo, represented by Agri-Merensky, won the National Youth Show. This achievement is particularly significant as Merensky was the only school representing the entire Limpopo province at this competition.
Kultuur en akademiese innovasie het eweneens geskitter. Merensky het nasionale wenners in ATKV-Digispel, Oppie Tong Af-redenaars en Kansvatter-redenaars opgelewer.
Die tienertoneel Melk en Heuning het by die nasionale Allegretto-toneelfees uitgeblink met toekennings vir onder meer die beste dramaproduksie, beste byspeler, beste manlike en vroulike hoofrolle en beste algehele teks.
Merensky also produced the best junior and senior projects at the national Tritech competition. The kykNET series Ideemakers, which is based on the interprovincial Tritech competition, was partially filmed on Merensky’s campus.

One of the most unique customs is the legendary MooPoo tradition. Every Grade 8 learner, new learner and teacher rings a bell before passing through a mud pit mixed with cow dung. Afterwards, they receive their official Bloublou Plasie certificate. When learners leave the school after matric, they ring the same bell again, symbolically marking the end of their Merensky journey.
