St Alban’s fall narrowly to St John’s in hard-fought Derby

In a highly anticipated clash, St Alban’s and St John’s produced a contest worthy of the occasion, with momentum swinging between the two sides throughout the match. In the end, it was St John’s who edged the encounter, claiming a hard-fought 20-14 victory after 70 minutes of intense rugby.

St Alban’s struck first following sustained pressure inside the St John’s 22 metre. After a series of transgressions by the visitors, the hosts capitalised with a well-executed maul that crossed the line to open the scoring. St John’s responded swiftly, however, producing a maul try of their own to level the match at 7-7 after the opening quarter.
The game then settled into a physical battle for territory and possession. An error at the breakdown from St Alban’s handed St John’s an opportunity deep in attacking territory. Opting for touch, the visitors set up another effective driving maul which resulted in their second try of the afternoon. A further three points shortly before halftime extended their lead to 17-7.
St Alban’s nearly had the final say before the break. A sharp line break from a scrum by Gian Moolman in the closing play of the half put the try line within reach, but the opportunity slipped away, leaving the score unchanged at halftime. With the weather conditions worsening, both sides recognised that territory and control would be key in the second half.

St Alban’s began the second half with renewed attacking intent, applying sustained pressure deep inside the St John’s half. Their efforts were rewarded when St John’s received a yellow card for a deliberate knockdown while under pressure. Despite the numerical advantage, St Alban’s initially struggled to convert their dominance into points as St John’s defence held firm.
The breakthrough eventually came through winger Rea Masuku, who finished sharply in the corner after a strong run down the touchline and a well-constructed multi-phase attack. The try brought St Alban’s back within three points at 17-14.
However, an unforced error from the subsequent restart allowed St John’s to regain momentum and add another penalty, extending their lead to 20-14.
From that point onward, St Alban’s controlled large portions of possession and territory, repeatedly entering the St John’s 22 and coming within metres of the try line. Despite the pressure and several promising opportunities, the St John’s defence remained resolute, denying the hosts any further points.
When the final whistle sounded, St John’s emerged with a narrow victory, while St Alban’s were left to reflect on missed opportunities in an otherwise spirited and determined performance.
